Retrieval of Antarctic sea ice concentration from WindSat

Abstract:Sea ice has a significant influence on atmosphere circumstance,climate change and marine environment,which makes it an important component of global climate system. Concentration is a major parameter that indicates the physical property of sea ice. This paper presents a sea ice environmental parameter retrieval algorithm using data from WindSat,a fully polar metric passive microwave radiometer. Sea ice concentration is retrieved from WindSat data by adapting NASA-TEAM (NT) algorithm,which has been put into application with special sensor microwave/imager (SSM/I). The relevant parameters and weather filters are modified,and sea ice concentration retrieved from WindSat is compared with the data from national snow and ice center.The result shows high consistency. The edge accuracy is improved to 10% while the relevant coefficient with SSMI is 0.951,which proves the feasibility of sea ice concentration retrieval using modified NT algorithm based on WindSat.
