Abstract  To further improve the data quality of dual polarization radar, the diagonal lightning rod of Xinghua X-band dual polarization weather radar station was replaced with a new process small-sized lightning rod,and the impact on differential reflectivity and differential phase shift was evaluated. An impact analysis was conducted on four lightning rods of the same material for Dafeng X-band dual polarization radar.By filtering weather processes and extracting radar data, the observation data of two radars during two weather processes were analyzed. The results show that the impact of lightning protection on polarization is distributed within a fixed range of four angles, corresponding to the actual orientation of the lightning rod.The differential reflectivity and differential phase shift are affected by the lightning rod and have a consistent trend with the orientation.Among them, the impact of lightning protection on differential phase shift is more significant than that on differential reflectivity. After changing the orientation of the lightning rod,the impact was reduced, with lightning protection affecting differential reflectivity was 0.1 dB to 0.2 dB and differential phase shift was 2°to 3°.It is hoped that the research results can provide reference for evaluating the impact of different materials of lightning rods on Xinghua X-band radar.
