Abstract Based on the analysis of the observation principle of the laser ceilometer and combining with the artificial experimental observation data and the backscattering intensity data of the laser altimeter,two methods for processing the backscattering intensity data of the laser ceilometer are proposed in this paper,which are logarithmic operation method and fixed threshold segmentation method.Using these two methods,the laser ceilometer can not only detect the cloud height but also highlight the optical characteristics of the near-surface atmospheric aerosol under different weather conditions such as fog,haze and precipitation.The results show that the real-time monitoring of fog,haze and precipitation by laser ceilometer can be realized by using the initial value,vertical trends and the changes with time of the backsatter intensity obtained by the laser ceilometer.
