Abstract  By using the methods of mathematical statistics and geographic information processing, this paper studies the spatial density distribution of cloud-to-ground lightning in Chongqing and its relationship with altitude, and discusses the differences and causes of cloud-to-ground lightning density in Chongqing. The research shows that the areas with high density of strong lightning and extremely strong lightning in Chongqing are mainly distributed in the western Chongqing and the Yangtze River valley, which are consistent with the distribution trend of mountains. The average intensity of positive lightning is significantly higher than that of negative lightning at any altitude. The correlation analysis of each altitude with the average intensity of positive and negative lightning flashes shows that there is no obvious linear relationship between the average intensity of positive and negative lightning flashes and the altitude.
