Abstract:In order to study the detection capability of millimeter-wave (Ka-band) cloud radar to the bright band of the melting layer,based on the gradient variation characteristics of radial velocity and the threshold of reflectivity by vertical pointed millimeter-wave cloud radar,the height range of melting layer bright band is determined.The automatic extraction for the height of the top,bottom,maximum echo intensity and maximum radial velocity gradient for the bright band is realized.The results show that the bright band of melting layer in precipitation could be recognized effectively by using the gradient characteristics of radial velocity,and the algorithm is not easily affected by convective activity.Within the melting layer,the reflectivity factor is consistent with the abrupt change range of radial velocity in the vertical direction.By comparing with the zero layer height of the sounding data at the corresponding observation time,the inverted melting layer height is close to the actual situation.
