Abstract：This paper is a demonstration of the operating principle, characteristics and sampling technology of common wind sensor. It specifically focuses on the principles of four approaches to compute the average direction and average speed of wind, and illustrates the features of each approach with examples. This paper also presents the evolving history on the wind measurement methods of meteorological departments and its effects on historical wind records, which could sever as reference for relevant users. Finally, this paper suggests that the wind records should better satisfy the needs of the society while being ensured to be smooth, so that they could be used as reference by meteorological observing instrument manufacturers and meteorological observation managerial departments.
