Abstract In order to further promote the automation reform of surface meteorological observation and realize the unattended operation of national level meteorological observation stations,it is very important to optimize the existing meteorological observation business process and ensure the stable operation of meteorological observation stations.This paper briefly introduces the structure principle of the meteorological wide area network in Hunan province and the network function of the serial port server,and presents a technical improvement method to realize unattended observation station.Through the technical improvement,the observation business process was optimized and the workload of the grass-roots meteorological department was reduced.In view of the typical problems that may occur in the unattended operation of surface meteorological observations in the future,the guarantee methods of meteorological equipment,communication network,emergency power supply and data backup are clarified,which can provide technical experience that can be used for reference to fully guarantee the unattended stable and efficient operation of national surface meteorological observation stations.
