Abstract A cold air wave in Jan 2009 was analyzed by using SWAN (Simulating Waves Nearshore) wave model and QN (Quik SCAT/NCEP) mixed wind data. The results show that simulation data have good consistency with observation data. The height of simulation wave is slightly smaller than the one of observation wave. And the curve of simulation data is relatively smooth, but ups and downs of observation curve is obvious. The SWAN wave model can well describe the waves caused by the cold air in the China Sea based on QN wind data as driving field.
