Abstract Aiming at how to take effective technical means of backing laser velocimeter speed results to the international system of units to meters and the basic unit of seconds, this paper introduces a scheme for making the prototype that can be used to study the laser velocimeter based on the principle of linear velocity simulator. This scheme uses the linear velocity of the prototype to simulate angular velocity in order to reach the requirements of 0.1-10 m/s linear velocity and 1% accuracy. According to the coefficient of linear thermal expansion to choose prototype material, the servo motor is applied to drive with PWM control. Photoelectric encoder takes the M/T method to measure the speed and uses non-contact methods to monitor the temperature. The traceability of the laser velocimeter is carried out according to the measurement results. This scheme is of great significance for making value traceability device of laser wind speed standards in the future.
