Abstract  Aerosol plays an important role in the earth climate system and the aerosol variation is the main basis for the uncertainty of climate prediction. The cloud-aerosol LIDAR infrared pathfinder satellite observation is the first spaceborne lidar system for measuring the global aerosol. The construction and basic theory of the cloud-aerosol LIDAR infrared pathfinder satellite observation are introduced. Then, this spaceborne lidar can be used to measure the global aerosol with the CALIOP.The global AOD distribution in January 2013 is analyzed by using the information from this lidar. The results indicate that aerosol is mainly located in the middle of Africa, the Middle East, India and China where the mean AOD can be 0.4-0.6 because of the industrial activity.
