Abstract This paper analyzes the features and applications of commonly used surge protection devices such as gas discharge tube,varistor and transient voltage suppressor etc.Through analyzing the volt-ampere characteristics of the surge protection devices,the differences in performance of the various protection devices are known and a theoretical basis for the rational use of surge protection devices in the actual lightning protection circuit design is provided.
