Abstract Using conventional observation data,ground automatic stations,FY2G,the airport automatic observation system and NCEP 0.25°×0.25° reanalysis data were used to analyze the strong wind and sandstorm weather at Urumqi Airport on May 28,2018.The results showed that strong cold air from Siberia moved southward,and a large amount of strong cold air accumulated in Lake Balkhash was guided vertically by the horizontal trough at high altitude to erupt into Xinjiang.There was a strong front area with a 28 ℃/10 latitude distance at 850 hPa,and a favorable circulation background with a 10 hPa pressure difference of 3 hours before and after the ground front.Before the weather arrived,the airport rapidly warmed up.On the 28th,the airport experienced a rapid increase in temperature,reaching a daily high of 37 ℃.After that,cold air invaded,causing a large temperature difference in some areas.The temperature dropped by 21 ℃ in 3.5 hours.Various indices indicate that the potential of the western part of northern Xinjiang,the Tianshan Mountains and their northern foothills gradually increases from west to east,and the upper atmosphere has strong unstable energy.The high and low altitude configuration of "high-level divergence,low-level convergence" is conducive to strengthening upward movement.This weather is accompanied by the strong development of convective cloud clusters,and gust fronts appear in Ili,Tacheng,Karamay and other places in the front of thunderstorm cloud clusters,causing strong ground winds in the above areas.Strong cold air invades and strongly intersects with warm air,triggering the development of multiple convective cloud clusters at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains,resulting in severe convective weather.
