Abstract Using multi-source observation data from high altitude,ground,and radar,as well as ERA5 reanalysis data,a meteorological diagnostic analysis was conducted on the formation mechanism of the wind and hail weather process in Ji'an City on March 21,2019.The results indicate that this process belongs to the typical oblique pressure frontogenesis type,where a strong dry cold advection at high altitude is superimposed on a strong warm and humid airflow at low altitude.The front is forced to rise,with convergence at low altitude and divergence at high altitude,leading to a strong development of upward movement.The characteristics of dry intrusion are abnormally obvious,with a dry layer thickness of 9 km and a high temperature of 40 ℃ at 400 hPa.Strong thermal instability exacerbates the instability of the atmospheric structure,and the release of unstable energy from surface convergence lines and cold air triggers the occurrence of large-scale strong winds and hail weather.Moderate to strong vertical wind shear is highly conducive to the development of highly organized convective systems.During the mature stage of radar echoes,there is a clear hanging structure with high hanging strong echoes and low-level weak echo areas.The vertical accumulated liquid water content is abnormally high (≥72 kg/m2),and the core reflectivity factor rapidly decreases during the extinction stage.By comparing and analyzing historical wind and hail cases,the similarities and differences between general wind and hail weather and extreme wind and hail weather are identified,and the threshold values of forecast characteristic indicators are extracted to establish the focus of extreme wind and hail weather forecasting in Ji'an City.
