Abstract  This paper analyzes the sounding data of 20 different types of hail processes in the central and western regions of Guizhou in 2016-2019,and discusses in particular the discriminant function of the actual height of the melting layer of hail on the occurrence of large hail. The results show that the hail process caused by long-lasting multi-monomer and super-monomer is more likely to produce large hail. The dry intrusion in the middle and upper layers of the convection will greatly reduce the height of the melting layer of the hail. The decrease of the height of the dry sphere temperature 0 ℃ layer corresponding to the wet sphere temperature 0 ℃ layer is well corresponding to the hail particle size.
