Abstract:Using MICAPS data, satellite and dual polarization radar products and other detection data, the environmental conditions and causes of a large-scale blizzard process that occurred in Xiangtan from January 21 to 22,2024 were analyzed in depth. The results showed that the blizzard weather process was formed by the intersection of cold and warm air over Xiangtan, and the southwest jet stream climbed along the cold pad.The central part of Hunan was located at the outlet of the 700 hPa jet stream, with good dynamic and water vapor conditions. The sounding curve indicates that the temperature stratification of rain and snow phase transition is key, with 700 hPa < 0 ℃,850 hPa < -4 ℃,ground temperature ≤ 0 ℃,and a sudden drop in ground temperature before snow accumulation. The satellite inversion features show an increase in 850 hPa specific humidity and cloud top height,as well as a significant decrease in cloud top temperature and GIIRS temperature profiles, which can be used to predict the transition of rain and snow phases. There are significant differences in the basic reflectivity and dual polarization parameter characteristics between blizzard and snow hail, which can effectively identify the two types of precipitation particles. When the transition between rain and snow occurs, the reflectance factor and differential reflectance decrease, and their distribution gradually becomes uniform, with a relatively high correlation coefficient, showing a precipitation phase dominated by dry snow. The research conclusion can provide a basis for short-term forecasting of heavy snowfall.
