Abstract:A diagnostic study of the severe wind and hail event over western Yunnan in the early morning of April 24,2025,utilizing Yingjiang Xband dualpolarization radar,Tengchong radiosonde, ground automatic weather stations, and ERA5 reanalysis data reveals that the convection was triggered by the combined effects of an eastwardmoving 500 hPa southern branch shortwave trough, lowlevel moisture transport via 700 hPa southwesterly flow over the YunnanMyanmar region, surface convergence, and orographic lifting along the Gaoligong Mountains. The Tengchong sounding exhibited a dryaloft and moistbelow profile with a Kindex of approximately 30 degrees Celsius,a lifted index of minus 2 degrees Celsius, and convective available potential energy of approximately 385 Joules per kilogram, providing a favorable thermodynamic environment for hail growth. The severe echo core evolved through three stages:development, peak hailfall, and redevelopment, achieving a maximum composite reflectivity of 66 dBZ and a peak vertically integrated liquid of 32.5 kilograms per square meter.Radial velocity indicated lowtomidlevel convergence and strong outflows, while dualpolarization signatures, including differential reflectivity columns, specific differential phase columns, crosscorrelation coefficient valleys, and total beam blockage by surface scatterers, corresponded to intense updrafts and mixedphase hydrometeors, serving as critical nearnowcasting indicators for hail identification.
